CELEBRATION OF THE UN CONVENTION ON CHILD RIGHTS

Kissidougou- Children, young men, parents and local authorities celebrated the 19 th anniversary of the UN Convention on Child Rights (CCR) in Kissidougou on November 20, 2008 under the chairmanship of Almamy Camara, Secretary General in charge of Communities at the Prefecture.
The UN CCR was unanimously adopted by the United Nations on November 20, 1989.Guinea is the 14 th country to sign it in 1990.

Since then, the Guinea Government with the support of NGOs and institutions, both national and international, organize activities in favour of children.

Kissidougou Social Affairs Prefectural Directorate with the support of Plan Guinea organized a competition between 4 communities (Sangardo, Fermessadou, Gbangbadou and the Urban Community) on the knowledge and execution of the CCR.

The main objectives of the celebration are:

  • The celebration of CCR by the children of Kissidougou, like the other children throughout the world
  • Children must understand the importance of this historic date (20 th November 1989)
  • Children must express themselves and promote their rights
  • Participants must protect and respect child rights

Participants included the representatives from the 4 above mentioned communities, commucal/prefectrural authorities, Guinean Children’s Parliament, Prefectural directorate of education, children/youth associations/movements, teachers and pupils from several schools, members of the jury and invited guests. Plan Guinea CD was represented and the Zonal Coordinator was also accompanied by several agents and those from WEST and Groupement des Prestataires de Services.

Speeches were made during the opening ceremony and centered on the need to protect and respect child rights anywhere/anytime.

During the competition, questions were asked on the history of the UN CCR and general knowledge of the CCR.

After 20 minutes, the leaders of the 4 communities gave their answers and the jury deliberated
and announced the results as follows. The urban community came first with 12.80 points on average, followed by Sangardo with 11.60, Fermessadou with 10.60 and Gbangbadou with 6.10 came last.
Token gifts were handed over to the communities including booklets on CCR.Prefectural Directorate of Social Affairs and Plan Guinea were happy about the mobilization and participation of children and parents in the planning and execution of this ceremony and thanked local authorities for their support.
