A VILLAGE WITHOUT EXCISION

Monday, 4th August 2008.
The village of Koumonin is in the district of Mafendou, located at 3 km of the Sub-prefecture of Bolodou, Prefecture of Gueckedou.
The inhabitants of this village were sensitized for a long time by a Pastor of the Protestant church on the consequences of the excision while referring to the Holy Scriptures of the Bible and the position of the church compared to this practice.
This Pastor, to materialize his position in favour of the abolishment of excision, did not allow his daughters to be circumcised. Then, the male children of the village founder, decided to marry the pastor’s daughters.
After the marriage, the two families decided to avoid excision of their daughters.
Regardless of being founding member of the village, the family did not organize any more ceremony in the village with regard to excision, although certain people practiced it.
The organizer of the Association AFAF, a partner NGO of Plan Guinea for the execution
of the project “Improvement of protection and wellbeing of the child and the woman”, reinforced the capacity of these families and that of the girls whom the parents prepared
to circumcise this year through the sensitization on the consequences of the excision.
He informed the population to organize training for the non circumcised girls.
The sensitized girls in turn, informed their parents, that they do not want to be circumcised any more, but rather, they prefer being trained, and also requested the ceremony of non genital mutilation to be organized.
They also expressed their determination and engagement to make an official statement
of abolishment of excision. This information was passed over by the team of coordination during the meeting of the organizers in March 2008.

Upon arrival of the coordination team on the field, same engagement was expressed officially by the villagers and the authorities in front of God and men, to make of Koumonin,
“A village without excision”
and to sign a pact with AFAF NGO in front of the authorities.
Before the ceremony, an oath was signed between all the villagers in this terms: “No villager must agree to disturb the ceremonies. All those who would not respect this decision, would pay fines”; “To realize their decision, each family would have to give his daughter for training without constraint”. This pact comprises an engagement of not practicing the excision in the locality and a plea for support with grouping of girls trained for their total valorization by education.

Meanwhile, the NGO will ask the inhabitants to express their needs and recommendations
for financial support from donors.

All for a Guinea without Genital Mutilation.
